Dundas West Animal Hospital (Feline Clinic)

Toronto, ON
Dundas West Animal Hospital (Feline Clinic)

Project Summary

Dundas West Animal Hospital aimed to establish two distinct environments to provide dedicated care for cats and dogs. The solution was to move to the neighbourhood building, retaining the proximity of the main clinic while fostering the uniqueness of the feline specie. The project's objective was clear: to create a serene, low-stress setting where feline patients could receive exceptional veterinary care—free from the anxiety typically associated with mixed-species clinics.

Our approach

In this project, the unit’s shape posed a challenge – it was long and narrow and built at the turn of the 20th century on a stone foundation with two different levels. The layout had very limited option on spatial distribution other than a central corridor. The height difference was mitigated by using it to distinguish the front (client facing) from the back (clinical areas), a set of steps allowing transition between the two.  As a cat-only hospital, every aspect of the facility was thoughtfully designed to meet the specific medical and behavioral needs of feline patients.

Key features of the clinic include:

  • Individual treatment areas alcove to ensure no line of sight between patients
  • Front section designed to maximize visibility of adoptable cats

Render VS Real

Using our 3D visualization tools, we were able to validate every practical element of the layout before construction began—ensuring optimal flow, function, and comfort. The result was so true to the renderings, it was hard to tell where the plans ended, and reality began.

Feedback

During the grand opening, the response to this hospital was overwhelming. Even with its narrow body the clinic is extremely functional, and the workflow is balanced. A State of art! From spatial layout and finishes to lighting and acoustic strategies, the design fosters a tranquil, cat-friendly environment that prioritizes comfort and reduces stress for both the animals and their owners.
